Sheila Britton's immersion in the world of art began at the early age of 8 when her parents enrolled her in her first oil painting class. Her interest and involvement with art and nature continued through her childhood and led to completion of an honours fine arts degree from the University of Guelph in 1974. A Bachelor of Education degree specializing in art education from the University of Toronto in 1975 led to a high school teaching career in Toronto which lasted 7 years. A move to the United States as well as taking time out to have two children shifted Sheila's career from teaching to free-lance illustration. She also continued to take art and design related courses while in the U.S. A return move to Toronto instigated a significant change in the direction of her work. Since that time in 1993, Sheila has devoted most of her artistic talents to establishing her own business in the custom tile market. Her work has evolved from the shiny surface of ceramic tile to the beauty and antiquity that natural stone tile surfaces offer. Custom projects revolve around the needs and interests of the particular client, which leads to an endless array of images and subjects. Sheila's natural strengths are towards botanical and nature-inspired subject matter for which she is well-known. Sheila's installations are enjoyed across Canada and into the U.S. Her other passion continues to be watercolour painting and she has completed many commissioned works over the years. |
